20 Lessons From 20 Years as a Project Manager

I saw this on Linkedin and it resonated in me. I thought share this with everyone.

1. Working late or early isn’t the answer to your problems; focus on why you feel you have to, then implement improvements.
2. If it doesn’t feel right, do something about it.
3. Use your team if you have a problem; it’s not the Project Manager’s role to fix everything.
4. Document and template as much as possible; it will save you a lot of time on future projects.
5. Every time you say yes, you make a small promise. Only say yes with knowing the impact and whether you can keep this promise.
6. Just because you’re right doesn’t mean you have to prove it. Doing so will waste a lot of time for little benefit.
7. A mistake repeated more than once is a decision. I stole that one, but I love it.
8. Always reflect on your performance, ideally daily, but if not weekly.
9. Create checklists for any repeatable processes; it saves you time and brainpower and reduces errors.
10. It’s just a job at the end of the day, and your entire life isn’t judged by it.
11. Don’t be ruled by your emotions, you’ll make you make terrible decisions; use neutral thinking.
12. Plan your day every day, be proactive, not reactive, to what’s happening around you, including communications.
13. Focus on the fundamentals of project management before anything else, as this is often enough.
14. Then, do the fundamentals consistently to build trust and confidence.
15. You can only control what you do, accept this, and you’ll be a lot happier.
16. Focus on helping and educating those involved in your project rather than expecting them to follow the process and methodology.
17. Do one thing at a time, no matter how small; you always get more done this way.
18. Your plan will change, and people won’t always follow your plan, accept it.
19. The latest to-do list app won’t help you to reduce your workload.
20. Ask lots of questions, including why questions. So many things are done because that’s how they’ve always been done, but new perspectives make a big difference.
