Alfred's New Ramblings

Stakeholder management or engagement

I was driving a project with a strange dynamic. Migrating the customer from one Data Center to another. Straightforward stuff, except they are not interested

The current DC is closing, services will be migrated, and the entire floor will be returned to the DC operator. This customer’s point of view: I didn’t want to move, you wanted it, this is your problem, you fix it. Any hard migration costs, eg Telco, movers etc you pay for it.

No matter how big the customer is, I can’t see them doing the same thing to Azure, AWS or GCS.

From the PM’s point of view, the communication with the customer is like Sisyphus. “Yes, we told you x times in y meetings we are closing”. For some strange reason, the CIO was kept out of the loop or playing oblivious. “Oh, we were not informed!” What was the PIC doing all this time? They were stalling, waiting for a chance to resolve this by bullying the vendor, us.

Quite surprising coming from an organization that takes prides in its reputation for excellent project management.
