{"id":1342,"date":"2011-07-20T15:40:40","date_gmt":"2011-07-20T07:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alfredivy.per.sg\/blogger\/?p=1342"},"modified":"2015-11-11T22:24:07","modified_gmt":"2015-11-11T14:24:07","slug":"sql-2005-cluster-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alfredivy.sg\/blogger\/2011\/07\/sql-2005-cluster-upgrade\/","title":{"rendered":"SQL 2005 cluster upgrade."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The main SQL server is on a SQL 2005 cluster.\u00a0 It is time for an upgrade to SQL 2008.\u00a0 This will be an interim measure until the hardware refresh the later half of 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The main aim of\u00a0the process is to\u00a0minimise downtime.\u00a0 Install the pre-requisites, Windows Installer 4.5 etc\u00a0on the passive nodes.\u00a0 You may need to move the active node around to accomplish this.<\/p>\n<p>When performing the actual upgrade, the trick is to perform the upgrade on the passive node only.\u00a0 Move the active node around until all the passive nodes are upgraded.\u00a0 This has to be done locally, not via remote desktop connection.\u00a0 If the nodes are virtual machines, you will need to use the ESX client or HyperV manager to do this.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft as always provide detailed documentation but lacks a summary to give you a heads up whats happening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/ms191295.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Link<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The main SQL server is on a SQL 2005 cluster.\u00a0 It is time for an upgrade to SQL 2008.\u00a0 This will be an interim measure until the hardware refresh the later half of 2012.
