{"id":243,"date":"2009-06-01T00:48:58","date_gmt":"2009-05-31T16:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alfredivy.per.sg\/blogger\/?p=243"},"modified":"2015-11-26T18:13:17","modified_gmt":"2015-11-26T10:13:17","slug":"sql-server-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alfredivy.sg\/blogger\/2009\/06\/sql-server-migration\/","title":{"rendered":"SQL Server migration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The databases on a sql server are located in the Data directory.\u00a0 This is usually located on a non system partition.\u00a0 So that database growth will not affect system stability.\u00a0 What happens you got a new spanking SAN?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Well,\u00a0 you can migrate the databases to the SAN via a new volume.\u00a0 This fairly easily done.\u00a0 Shut down the application using it.\u00a0 Right mouse click on the database and detach it.<\/p>\n<p>Copy the database (.mdf) and the transaction log (*.ldf) to the SAN volume.\u00a0 Attach the database back.\u00a0 Some down time required, you can do all this in 10 minutes or less unless you have a multi-gig database.<\/p>\n<p>Another method of migration is to shut down everything, application and SQL.\u00a0 Copy everything to the SAN volume and swap drive lettters.<\/p>\n<p>There are other ways to move the databases within and between servers.
